It was a tragic scene in Benin-City, the Edo State capital yesterday after 18 month old baby died hours after the mother, Ata Buhari, mistakenly served the child kerosene instead of water.
The tragic incident happened about 10am at Iguma Street, Off Orewere Street, Medical Stores Road, Benin.
Vanguard reports that, the child had cried for water but Mrs. Buhari, who sells kerosene, mistakenly gave him the product stored in a beverage can.
She only realised it when the child spat out the kerosene, prompting the mother to cry for help.
The little child, who cried in pain went blank few minutes later.
The child was forced to drink some red oil before he was rushed to the hospital but gave up upon arrival at the hospital.
Lamenting the incident, Mrs. Buhari, who hails from Kogi State, said one of her children had filled an empty can of beverage with water which they took to the shop that fateful morning.
She noted that similar containers in which she stored kerosene were equally kept in the shop and, sadly, when the child complained of thirst, she mistakenly picked the one filled with kerosene and gave him.
The father of the child, Mr. Buhari Hassan, a bricklayer, cried out that he was called to the hospital where he was presented with the corpse of his only son.
