Mitchell Bowie, 18, was found dead on July 31 this year at his Redcar home
A ‘fake’ Facebook girlfriend told a trusting teenage to kill himself, his grieving relatives told a court.
Mitchell Bowie, 18, was found dead on July 31 at his family’s home in Redcar by his devastated brother.
Today his family said they believe his Facebook girlfriend is a person using a fake profile – an online phenomenon known as a ‘catfishing’.
An inquest was told Mr Bowie had started ‘seeing’ a girl from Liverpool who he had met on Facebook earlier this year.
But Mr Bowie’s family told senior Teesside coroner Clare Bailey, that they didn’t believe the two ever met.
They added that the Facebook girlfriend constantly made excuses not to meet Mr Bowie and sent threatening messages claiming she ‘knew people’ in Manchester who were ‘going to stab him’.
The teenager later started talking to another woman on Facebook who claimed to be his girlfriend’s cousin. His family believe they were both the same person, but this has not been confirmed by Cleveland police
