Nigeria set to build a sports university

As part of efforts to fully develop the sports sector in Nigeria, the Senate says it has initiated a bill for the establishment of a Sports University in the country. Senate President, Senator Abubakar Saraki revealed this yesterday in Abuja when he played host to the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Sports Writers Association (SWAN) who paid him a courtesy visit in his office.

Saraki said time has come for Nigeria to begin to do things like they are done in other countries adding that sports can only be truly developed in the country when things are addressed properly. “Sports is vital in social development of every nation and Nigeria cannot be an exception. Our main challenge is in the area of sports administration and we must begin to put in place those things that can help us to achieve our full potentials.

“Already at the senate level, we have a bill for the establishment of a Sports University in Nigeria. This is to make sure that we have the right people in this sector which is very critical for our development as a nation. At times it is frustrating the way sports is managed in Nigeria.

It is very embarrassing to here evert now and then that our athletes were stranded or that we could not register for competitions due to lack of money. “We have been working on two important bills for the repealing of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and that of the National Sports Commission (NSC) laws using every legal legislative process and as soon as possible the NFF bill will be amended.”
